Why are people talking about Smartlipo™?

Cynosure has developed this new technology that uses the most recent laser technology available to melt the fatty tissue that resides within your body. Before Smartlipo, surgeons infiltrated the area to be treated with tumescent solution and then vigorously used a wand-like canella to remove the fat.

Why is Smartlipo™ better?

The ability to melt the fatty tissue means that patients will generally recover much more quickly and that there will be less bruising to the treated area. This is a big advantage. The patient undergoes less trauma and experiences less down time.

How is Smartlipo™ performed?

Smartlipo™ is similar to conventional liposculpture procedures, but only requires local anesthesia. A small incision is made usually in a skin crease or fold to reduce any visible scarring and a cannula (a very tiny tube) is inserted beneath the skin and into the fat deposit. With conventional liposuction, the cannula is moved back and forth to rupture the fat cells and suction is used to vacuum out the cells. With Smartlipo™, a laser is used to rupture the fat cells so there is less trauma to the surrounding tissues and the procedure is less invasive. The laser also promotes collagen growth beneath the skin which causes the skin to be even more toned and sculpted. Smartlipo™ usually takes no more than an hour, and once the procedure is complete, the incision is sutured and bandaged. Smartlipo™ allows our plastic surgeons to perform very precise fat removal procedures for hard to reach fat deposits in places like knees and ankles, along the chin and face, and the inner thighs and male breasts.

Is Smartlipo™ for everyone?

No. Cynosure developed Smartlipo™ for the treatment of specific smaller areas of the body. If you have a little extra abdominal fat or love handles, saddlebags, or areas under the chin that you want removed, Smartlipo™ is the ideal treatment. For larger people wanting more traditional body sculpting, traditional liposuction is still your best bet.

Why should people choose SFCCS for Smartlipo™? Is there anything special about your facility?

As a matter of fact there is. SFCCS is licensed and regulated by the state Board of Medicine. Many of the clinics offering Smartlipo™, particularly those advertising that they should only do Smartlipo™ under local anesthesia, are not licensed by the state, and are actually doing some very dangerous things. They are delivering some very strong local anesthesia without traditional safe patient monitoring protocols in place. Also, they are often performing multiple Smartlipo™ procedures several days apart. This can be unsafe.

Are there any other reasons SFCCS should be the location of choice?

One other big one comes to mind. Because SFCCS is a state licensed facility we are able to remove the fat from patients' bodies that has been melted with the Smartlipo™ equipment. At most other clinics they must leave the melted fat inside of you and it is up to your body to gradually eliminate the fat over a period of weeks or months. Only state licensed facilities can actually remove the melted fat.

How do I prepare for my Smartlipo™?

You will want to be in good health, as close to your target weight loss goal as possible and your weight should be stable for at least six months prior to your procedure. If you have a cold, infection or other illness, you will need to postpone your procedure. If you smoke, you should quit at least two weeks before your procedure. It is also important to refrain from drinking alcohol at least 48 hours before your procedure. During your consultation, you will be given specific directions to help you prepare for your procedure.

How long does Smartlipo™ take?

Smartlipo™ generally takes between 45 minutes to one hour depending on the area being treated.

What form of anesthesia is used?

Because Smartlipo™ is minimally invasive and targets small areas of difficult fat deposits, local anesthesia is all that is necessary for the procedure.

Can I return home the same day?

Yes. However, you must make arrangements for someone to pick you up, take you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours.

How long before I can return to normal activity?

Most people return to work and their usual activity within a day or two, depending on the area being treated. Strenuous activities should be avoided until your follow up appointment with your plastic surgeon.

Will I gain weight after Smartlipo™?

The fat cells removed using the Smartlipo™ technique will not return because the human body stops producing new fat cells after puberty. However, the remaining fat cells in your body can continue to expand with fat consumption. You may not gain weight in the treated area, but you can certainly gain weight in any of the remaining fat cells in your body. Continuing a healthy diet and getting regular exercise is important after your procedure to maintain your Smartlipo™ results.
