Collagen Injection
Collagen Injections can be used to fill in creases, wrinkles, and depressions in facial skin, including laugh lines, smile lines, facial wrinkles, lip creases, crow's feet, and acne scars. It can also be used to treat areas of the neck, back, and chest, or to create plumper cheeks or lips. The injected collagen is derived from purified bovine collagen (very similar to human collagen) and has been FDA approved since 1981. To maintain the benefits of collagen treatments, injections are usually repeated periodically. New collagen injections are recommended every three to six months depending on how quickly your body absorbs the new collagen. The time between treatments varies depending on the patient and the part of the face being treated. Collagen injections are absorbed by the body more quickly in areas with greater muscle movement.
It is very common to combine collagen injections with other cosmetic procedures such as Botox®, laser skin resurfacing or facelift. If you are at or over age 40, an electrocardiogram will be required. You must stop smoking, taking aspirin or taking diet pills at least two weeks prior to the procedure.
